Secret Scanner on GitHub: How Connected Pentests Stop Supply Chain Breaches in Your Repository

The Hidden Threat in Your Git History

Your developers commit code to GitHub every day. Most of those commits are clean. But somewhere in your repository's history—buried in a forgotten branch, hidden in an old config file, or accidentally pushed years ago—there's probably a secret.

An API key. A database password. An AWS credential. A Slack webhook URL.

Security teams know this. Attackers know this too. In 2026, supply chain breaches that start with exposed secrets in git repositories are among the fastest attack vectors available. A compromised credential doesn't just hit your application—it opens doors to your infrastructure, your databases, your third-party integrations, and potentially your customers' data.

TurboPentest's Secret Scanner detects these hardcoded secrets in your git history before attackers find them. When you connect your GitHub account to a pentest, Secret Scanner runs automatically, scanning your repository for exposed credentials and secrets that could become entry points for supply chain attacks.

How Secret Scanner Works in a Connected Pentest

When you run a pentest on TurboPentest and connect your GitHub repository, the platform activates three white-box security tools that dig into your codebase and dependencies:

1. Secret Scanner - detects secrets and hardcoded credentials in git history
2. Code Scanner - performs static application security testing (SAST) across 30+ programming languages
3. Dep Scanner - analyzes software composition, identifying vulnerable dependencies through comprehensive dependency vulnerability scanning

These white-box tools work alongside TurboPentest's 11 black-box security tools (Port Scanner, Server Audit, Web Scanner, Vuln Scanner, TLS Analyzer, Sub Hunter, Web Probe, Enumerator, WAF Detect, Net Scanner, and Security Checks) to create a complete attack surface assessment—from your git repository through your infrastructure to your running application.

The Secret Scanner Process

When Secret Scanner runs:

• Scans git history - examines commits, branches, and tags for patterns matching known credential formats
• Identifies exposed credentials - finds API keys, tokens, database passwords, private encryption keys, and other secrets
• Traces exposure timeline - determines when the secret was first committed and if it's still accessible
• Prioritizes by risk - flags secrets with active access or high-value target systems (databases, cloud platforms, payment processors)

Unlike simple regex-based secret detection, Secret Scanner understands context. A string that looks like a password but is actually a test value in documentation won't create false positives that waste your remediation time.

Why Supply Chain Attacks Start Here

The 2024 SEC cybersecurity rules and emerging NIS2 regulations in the EU now require organizations to map and secure their software supply chains. GitHub credentials are a direct path into that chain.

Consider the attack chain:

1. Attacker finds exposed credential in your git history (via public GitHub repository or after gaining read access)
2. Attacker uses credential to access your CI/CD pipeline, cloud infrastructure, or third-party services
3. Attacker injects malicious code into your build process or dependencies
4. Compromised code flows downstream to customers, partners, and production systems

A single exposed credential can become a supply chain breach affecting hundreds of downstream users. Organizations like SolarWinds, 3CX, and others learned this lesson at scale.

Secret Scanner stops this attack at step 1—before the credential is weaponized.

Pentesting Your Repository: What You Get

When you run a pentest with GitHub connected, TurboPentest's Paladin AI orchestration analyzes all tool outputs from both black-box and white-box phases. Paladin AI includes a Supply Chain specialist agent that synthesizes findings across Secret Scanner, Code Scanner, Dep Scanner, and infrastructure-level tools to construct a complete risk profile.

Your pentest report includes:

• Professional PDF report with prioritized findings, CVSS scores, and proof-of-concept demonstrations
• Attack surface map showing endpoints, open ports, technologies, authentication mechanisms, and exposed repository risks
• STRIDE threat model mapping secrets exposure to credential theft and privilege escalation threats
• Signed third-party attestation letter with SHA-256 report hash for integrity verification
• Copy-paste retest commands for each finding, so you can verify fixes without running another full pentest

Self-Service Pentesting Starts at $99

Traditionally, discovering secrets in your repository meant hiring a penetration testing firm—sales calls, scheduling delays, fees starting at $5,000+.

With TurboPentest, you verify your domain ownership via DNS TXT record, select your pentest tier, and connect GitHub. Pentests run asynchronously within your tier's time limit (60-240 minutes depending on tier), and you receive your report with all findings, remediation steps, and attestation.

TurboPentest pricing:

• Audit-Ready - $99 (4 AI agents, 60 minutes)
• Threat-Hunt - $299 (10 AI agents, 120 minutes) - most popular tier for GitHub-connected pentests
• Adversarial-Depth - $699 (20 AI agents, 240 minutes)

Annual subscriptions include 10-20% discounts. Volume discounts: 10+ credits 10% off, 50+ credits 20% off, 100+ credits 30% off.

DevOps Security in Your Workflow

If you're already using GitHub Actions for CI/CD, TurboPentest integrates directly—you can trigger pentests as part of your deployment pipeline through GitHub Actions CI/CD integration. VS Code users can also install the TurboPentest extension for local secret detection feedback.

For teams using Burp Suite Pro for application security testing, TurboPentest's Burp Suite Pro extension allows you to correlate findings from both automated pentesting and manual security testing.

Stop Secrets from Becoming Breaches

Your git repository is an active part of your attack surface. Exposed secrets in git history are not just technical debt—they're vulnerabilities with a clear exploit path.

TurboPentest's Secret Scanner, combined with Code Scanner for SAST and Dep Scanner for dependency vulnerabilities, gives you comprehensive visibility into the code-level risks that supply chain attackers exploit.

Start your first pentest today at turbopentest.com—pentests that used to cost tens of thousands now cost $99, with no sales calls or scheduling required. Connect your GitHub repository and discover secrets before attackers do.
